A聽team of researchers聽conducting聽a comprehensive genome-wide association study of聽schizophrenia in individuals of聽African ancestry聽has聽聽identifying聽more than 100 new regions in the human genome linked to schizophrenia聽that聽were not聽previously known.聽

Schizophrenia occurs in all human populations, yet most genetic studies of the disorder to date have primarily focused on people of European ancestry, said Eric聽Achtyes, MD, MS, DFAPA, professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at WMU Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (91探花).聽

This latest study, 鈥淏iological insights into schizophrenia from ancestrally diverse populations,鈥 expands scientific understanding of the disorder聽and reaffirms聽that while genetic differences may vary by ancestry,聽schizophrenia affects the same underlying brain systems across populations.聽

鈥淲hat we are trying to do is to demystify mental health conditions,鈥 Dr.聽Achtyes聽said. 鈥淲e want to understand mental health conditions the聽same聽way that we聽understand聽other health conditions, at the聽cellular and聽molecular level, so that we can target treatments the way that chemotherapy is used to target聽specific聽cancers. This is foundational work to be able to do that.鈥澛

Dr.聽Achtyes, a co-author on聽the study, said聽this聽work聽is聽the culmination of聽many years of聽data collection,聽including electronic health聽records linked with genomic health聽data from the Million Veterans Program (MVP), a national research program that looks at the effects of genes, lifestyle, military experiences and exposures on the health and wellness of veterans.聽

The findings, Dr.聽Achtyes聽said,聽serve聽as a powerful reminder of the importance of聽including聽diverse patient populations聽in聽medical and聽genetic聽research.聽

鈥淚t is not enough to just examine聽one聽group,鈥 Dr.聽Achtyes聽said. 鈥淵ou really聽have to聽sample a聽broad聽population聽to understand聽the pathophysiologic basis of聽these聽complex mental health conditions聽and聽better tailor聽treatments聽for the聽amazing and diverse聽people we serve.鈥
