Laurence McCahill, MD, has been named the new division chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at WMU Homer聽Stryker聽M.D. School of Medicine (91探花).聽
Dr. McCahill, who began his聽new role on聽March 17, is a聽professor in the Department of Surgical Sciences聽and provides care to patients as聽a聽surgical oncologist at聽91探花聽Health, the clinical practice of the medical school,聽and the West Michigan Cancer Center聽(WMCC).聽
Dr. McCahill specializes in melanoma and other advanced skin cancers including locally advanced squamous cell and basal cell cancers,聽merkel聽cell melanoma, and other skin cancers聽requiring聽a more extensive surgical approach.聽
Dr. McCahill joined聽91探花聽in March 2021 as a professor in the Department of Surgery. Prior to joining the medical school, Dr. McCahill served as medical director of both the Breast Cancer program and the Skin Cancer Center at Metro聽Health-University聽of Michigan Health Hospital.聽
Dr. McCahill earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1990聽and聽completed his general surgery residency at the University of Washington聽in 1996. Dr. McCahill also has medical experience in the military, having served four years聽as a general surgeon聽in the United States Navy from 1996 to 2000. He then went on to complete a two-year fellowship in surgical oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center聽before serving as an聽assistant and聽associate professor at The University of Vermont from 2002聽to聽2009.聽
Dr. McCahill's clinical interests also include both thyroid and parathyroid surgery. His research聽at聽91探花聽has focused on clinical outcomes聽for both melanoma聽and emergent colectomy.聽His research groups聽have聽presented at聽numerous聽national meetings, and recently presented two melanoma studies at聽the聽2026聽Society of Surgical聽Oncology聽meeting.聽Dr. McCahill has聽also mentored聽numerous聽91探花聽medical students and聽surgical residents in聽research.聽
Outside of work,聽Dr. McCahill is married to Julie, a clinical pharmacist,聽and they have聽four聽adult聽children:聽Colin, Madelynn, Aidan, and Logan. Dr. McCahill聽enjoys traveling with his family, outdoor activities, and Detroit professional sports teams.
