Generous donation allows 91探花 team to further explore the cause of a common kidney disease

A generous聽donation聽of $75,000聽from Henry and Martha Upjohn is allowing聽a research team at聽WMU Homer聽Stryker聽M.D. School of Medicine (91探花)聽to continue聽its groundbreaking exploration into the cause of a common kidney disease.聽

The research team, led by Erik Larson, PhD, and Gregory Vanden Heuvel, PhD,聽 in Nature Communications explaining how Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD)聽emerges, a discovery that opens the potential for preventing what is currently considered an incurable ailment.聽

This most recent聽gift from the Upjohns will support聽further聽development of a聽鈥渙ne-of-a-kind experimental model鈥澛爋f聽ADPKD that more accurately reflects human disease.聽

鈥淲hile we consider the research important, to have the community put money behind it really speaks to the broad importance of this work to patients,聽and聽to the impact that it'll have outside of the laboratory,鈥澛爏aid Dr. Larson, who serves as professor and vice chair in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. 鈥淓xternal funding and gifts like this make the research possible.鈥澛

ADPKD is lethal, affecting one in every 400 to 1,000 people, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is one of the most common inherited diseases, and an affected individual will accumulate kidney cysts that eventually cause kidney failure.聽聽聽

ADPKD is caused by inheriting a non-functional PKD1 gene, but a cyst does not happen until the second working copy is turned off, a process called 鈥渟econd hit鈥 inactivation.聽

鈥淭he Nature paper described the differences between the human and mouse PKD1 gene and why humans get ADPKD through this second hit, but we really didn't know how the second hit happened,鈥澛爏aid聽Dr. Vanden Heuvel, professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. 鈥淪ince then,聽we've聽generated a lot of data to聽provide聽a model for how the second hit happens.鈥澛

鈥淥ur prior findings revealed聽why, and now we鈥檙e working on how it鈥檚 happening,鈥 Dr. Larson added. 鈥淏oth pieces of information are essential for creating a preventative.聽That's聽what the field has been missing.鈥澛

The research team鈥檚 progress is particularly exciting聽for聽Dr. Vanden Heuvel, who has been studying ADPKD for more than three decades,聽聽

鈥淏ack then it was just, what can we do to slow down cyst growth?鈥 Dr. Vanden Heuvel said. 鈥淣ow,聽there鈥檚聽a very real possibility that our research could prevent cyst development.聽That's聽where the research is going.鈥澛
